Six police
departments operating as the Massachusetts Cities Collaborative
purchased a face-recognition system from Viisage Technology Inc.
which can make images of suspects available on a shared network.
Departments in the communities of Auburn, Brockton, Fall
River, Fitchburg, Littleton and New Bedford comprise the
collaborative, which is paying $1 million for the technology,
Viisage said in a statement. They will be the first law-
enforcement agencies in the U.S. to be linked to one face-
recognition database, the company said.

Viisage’s FaceExplorer compares facial images shot by its
cameras to photos of known terrorists and criminals, the statement
said. Images of people arrested in any of the communities can
immediately be checked against photographs in the combined
database, it said.
Richard Spirlet, spokesman for the New Bedford Police
Department, which leads the collaborative, confirmed the purchase.
He referred questions to Police Chief Arthur Kelly, who wasn’t
immediately available.
The shares of Littleton-based Viisage fell 13 cents to $2.92
in midafternoon trading. They had risen 57 percent since before
the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on expectations that demand for
increased security at airports and other facilities would boost
sales.
