The Northern Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce and the U.S. Small Business Administration have worked together for years in partnership to ensure Rhode Island’s small businesses not only survive, but also thrive. That’s why we’re pleased this year to be a co-sponsor of the annual Salute to Small Business. In a way, the celebration gives all businesses a chance to share in the accomplishments of these outstanding award winners. These award winners represent a myriad of industries from all across our state. In fact, there’s a good chance you know at least one award winner personally. You may be their customer or you’ve used a service or met them through a professional organization.
What’s so wonderful about these awards is that they showcase the “American Dream” and prove it is alive and well and living in Rhode Island.

As we all know, it’s not easy running a business. There is great risk involved. At some point the leader of a company, whether it’s the CEO of a 100-employee firm or the entrepreneur owner of a small company, they all takes risks.
But with the help of organizations like the SBA and the Chamber of Commerce, most businesses that take risks are fortunate to succeed. That is why the Salute to Small Business is the perfect opportunity to honor those who have excelled. We salute their success and learn how they accomplished this daunting task.
The annual Salute to Small Business also provides many opportunities for small business owners or those who are thinking of starting their own businesses. The 10 seminars and 47 expo participants that precede the awards dinner provide a great learning opportunity. I encourage all small business owners to attend these events.
This annual Salute to Small Business also plays another important role for the business community. It gives business a chance to tell our stories to others. I often wonder what the state of Rhode Island would be like if the business community stopped contributing to the many worthwhile charitable causes we have? I wonder what would happen if hard working businessmen and women didn’t take the time to volunteer for various boards and commissions? Do our colleagues know what we do? Do we share information with our peers? Probably not. Most of us like our “giving” to be quiet.
The Salute to Small Business allows us to say we’re proud to be a member of the business community. The business community that – through jobs – helps to create wealth. The business community which – in many communities – is the largest group of taxpayers. The business community that – through monetary donations and contribution of volunteer services – works with many non-profits to enhance the quality of life in our area.
Let’s be proud of who we are and what we stand for. Let’s make sure everyone knows it. That’s why, on behalf of the 1,300 businesses that are members of the Northern Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce, I’m pleased to say our Chamber is a co-sponsor of the Rhode Island Salute to Small Business Celebration.”
