Greetings, On behalf of the City of Warwick, I would like to welcome you to this 1999 Economic Development Report. As Rhode Island’s second largest city, Warwick stands at the Crossroads of Southern New England. With an exceptional quality of life, good schools and an educated workforce, Warwick is primed for success.
As host to the T. F. Green Airport, millions of visitors are welcomed to Warwick each year. Since the recent $200 million terminal expansion, the facility has become known as the fastest growing airport in the country. Warwick’s Department of Economic Development is working to capitalize on this expansion by meeting with new companies that know the economic value of the airport and are attracted to our community.

Warwick is on the move. One of the City’s most exciting transportation projects will create an intermodal gateway within the Warwick Station District. It calls for the construction of an Amtrak/commuter rail station and an elevated people mover connection to T. F. Green Airport. The plan has received $25 million under the 1998 Federal Highway Bill, now known as the Transportation and Equity Act for the 21st Century.
I believe this commuter stop on the closest Amtrak rail line to any airport in the country will be invaluable in capitalizing on the strategic location of the airport with respect to the New York and Boston metropolitan areas. Amtrak is scheduled to begin high-speed rail service between New York and Boston this fall. The 150-mile-per-hour trains will be the fastest in the Western Hemisphere, providing an exciting transportation option and an economic engine to generate new business possibilities for our area. It will also relieve peak hour traffic congestion on Routes 95 and 295 and help to improve our air quality.
The Warwick Station Redevelopment Agency will implement and guide development in the district. I am confident that their efforts, coupled with improved traffic flow, signage and landscaping enhancements on Post Road, will encourage private sector firms to invest in the airport area.
Warwick continues to flourish. The City’s financial picture is bright. Investment agencies such as Moody’s and Standard and Poor’s agree that Warwick remains on solid financial ground with a diversified economy that reflects the city’s role as the state’s commercial and retail center. Combined with a continued investment in our public schools, Warwick offers residents the opportunity to live and work in safe, suburban neighborhoods. With sewer construction projects nearing completion, Warwick is better prepared to protect our most precious natural resource, Narragansett Bay, along with our many ponds and streams.
I am extremely excited about Warwick’s future economic development opportunities. I envision great things as we work together to realize the full potential of our great City.
Sincerely,
Lincoln Chafee
Mayor of Warwick
