Mikhail Gorbachev to visit R.I. April 1

Nobel Peace Prize winner and former leader of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev will join members and guests for an appearance at the Carnegie Abbey Club, a private sporting estate in Portsmouth, on Saturday evening, April 1.

Gorbachev’s visit opens this season’s World Leadership Guest Series at the club, which last year included presentations by former President George H.W. Bush and former President William J. Clinton.

Gorbachev will address issues of international leadership, the restructuring of global priorities and peace in the 21st century. Other topics he is expected to address are: What is the role of Russia in the new world order? What threats do extremism pose to world peace? How can the West better deal with Islamic world?

Gorbachev oversaw changes to his nation’s political, economic and social landscape and the eventual end of communism in the late 1980s, ending the prolonged Cold War with the United States. Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990, he was also named Time Magazine’s Man of the Decade in that year.

Gorbachev will be accompanied to Rhode Island by his daughter, Irina Virganskaya, the vice president of the Gorbachev Foundation.

“President Gorbachev’s visit provides our members and guests a rare opportunity to learn from one of the 20th century’s most significant public figures, a man who shaped history in the struggle to spread freedom and democracy in the world,” said Brian O’Neill, owner of Carnegie Abbey. “This event is a great opportunity for members to meet President Gorbachev in an intellectually stimulating, relaxed environment.”
