NBC 10 receives OSHA ‘Star’ for safety programs

NBC 10, the television station in Cranston, received membership Friday into the U.S. Labor Department’s Occupational Health and Safety Agency’s Star Voluntary Protection Program, recognizing the station for leadership in TV news health and safety programs.

NBC 10 is the first TV station in the country to receive the recognition. The station officially received the honor during a ceremony Friday at its Cranston studios on Kenney Drive.

The “Star” certification follows an OSHA three-member team’s on-site review of the station, its safety and health management programs and interviews with employees.

Requirements for application to the Voluntary Protection Program include management support and employee involvement; worksite hazard analysis; prevention and control programs; and safety and health training for employees. Each of these elements must be effective, in place and in operation at least one year before a company can apply to join the program.

Voluntary Protection Program companies achieve average injury rates 50 percent lower than other companies in their industry, an NBC 10 press release said.
