Newport naval site honored by EPA

NEWPORT – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently recognized the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Newport for achieving environmental improvements that exceed required compliance levels.

The division voluntarily employed environmental management systems to strengthen performance, reported progress annually to the public and performed outreach to the community, the EPA said.

During the past year, center staff members provided environmental education at Gaudet Middle School in Middletown, participated in local beach cleanups and hosted sustainability expos for local schools.

Staff members also made commitments to achieve environmental improvements relating to energy use, water consumption, waste generation and land preservation during the next three years.
