PROVIDENCE – oso.com, the popular "Ocean State Online" Web site operated by Cox Interactive Media, plans to discontinue its free e-mail service, according to Tom Viall, a studio manager with Cox who oversees the site.
Viall said he could not disclose the number of e-mail accounts that oso.com hosts. He said the site will be making a number of technical changes in addition to discontinuing the e-mail service, although those changes likely will be transparent to viewers.
Cox Interactive Media operates a network of local web sites in 20 major U.S. markets, including Atlanta, Pittsburgh, Seattle and Phoenix. Viall said a decision was made to discontinue the free Web-based e-mail service in all of those markets, largely because of competition from Web-based sites such as Hotmail and Yahoo! Cox Interactive has operated the oso.com site since 1998.

Government to form new
IT unit in Rhode Island
WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI) and Major General Reginald Centracchio recently announced that the U.S. Department of Defense plans to establish a new unit within the Rhode Island Air National Guard to provide information technology services for the U.S. Air Force and the department’s Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA).
The new unit’s primary mission will be "Information Assurance," as part of the Department of Defense’s efforts to protect its Global Information Grid. Information Assurance involves protecting the security and integrity of the department’s internal network and its connection with the Web.
The unit will be located in a future 5,000-square-foot building at the Coventry Air National Guard Station and will have 50 members at full strength. Reed said the new unit will create new jobs and economic development for the state, and said personnel from the Rhode Island National Guard will receive technical training that could be valuable in protecting the state’s emergency management information infrastructure.
The work will support the Joint Task Force for Computer Network Operations under U.S. Space Command, and also will provide technical computer-incident analysis to support DISA’s Global Network Operations Security Center and the Defense Department’s Computer Emergency Response Team.
Purvis Systems wins $14
million contract from NUWC
MIDDLETOWN – Purvis Systems Inc. was awarded a $14.1 million contract from the Navy for operational, technical and engineering services to support the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) in Newport. The contract was announced July 23 by Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy (D-RI).
Purvis will provide laboratory operations and maintenance support services at three NUWC facilities: the TRIDENT Life Cycle Support Facility, Combat Control Systems Laboratory and Combat Systems Technology Laboratory. The contract was awarded based on a nationwide competition among all eligible businesses.
Kennedy said the Navy is taking advantage of the wealth of local technology available to support submarine research and development by relying on the natural synergy between NUWC and Purvis. He added that the contract further illustrates the importance of Aquidneck Island to the defense industry.
Purvis Systems employs about 60 employees at its office on West Main Road in Middletown.
EMC breaks even for second
quarter
HOPKINTON, Mass. – EMC Corp., the world’s largest provider of data-storage systems, posted a $1 million profit for the second quarter, or break even on a per-share basis. The result was down from a $108.8 million profit, or 5 cents a share, for the second quarter of 2001.
Revenues dropped from more than $2 billion a year ago to $1.39 billion during the second quarter, as increased revenue from storage services failed to offset a drop in system sales.
EMC President and CEO Joe Tucci said that the company is being negatively affected by a "tight-fisted" spending environment that has dragged down the entire information technology industry. He said that most large corporations continue to delay major IT projects, which limits companies’ deployments that can provide a rapid return on their investment.

use daly.commerce application
EAST GREENWICH – AliMed Inc., a Dedham, Mass.-based manufacturer and supplier of medical, orthopedic and ergonomic work-place products, recently began using East Greenwich-based daly.commerce’s commerce 5, a shipment-management software application, to facilitate AliMed’s roughly 1,300 daily orders.
daly.commerce says its software provides an efficient and comprehensive distribution program for AliMed, which has annual sales of roughly $60 million. AliMed prides itself on "same-day" shipments from more than 100 manufacturers.
AliMed uses several other commerce5 products. Before using daly.commerce’s Electronic Payments system, AliMed was doing batch processing five times daily to authorize credit care payments. With the software, authorization occures in real time.
