“As we work to modernize city government, we want to make it as convenient as possible for residents and visitors to use City services,” Mayor David N. Cicilline said in a news release. “In the unfortunate circumstance that someone receives a parking ticket, this new electronic payment program makes it easier to pay their dues quickly and avoid late charges.”
The system does have some downsides: While tickets issued on hand-held computers are posted within 24 hours, old-fashioned handwritten tickets “may take several days,” the Web site warns.
And the city tacks on a $3 “convenience fee” – not a bad deal if you’re a day or two away from having your fine double (they all do after 14 days) or triple (after 28 days), but eight times the cost of a first-class stamp. The city accepts Visa and MasterCard, by the way, and transactions are completed on a secure server.
Even if you’re not planning to pay a ticket online, you may find the site useful if you’re having trouble understanding what a ticket was for, or you need information about how to contest a violation. The site includes an “anatomy of a ticket” feature showing how to read your ticket, and a detailed “frequently asked questions” section.
Ticket payment processing is “just one of many” services the city plans to offer this year to make government “more convenient and accessible,” officials said. Tax payments and fees will soon also be payable on the Web.
