The Striking Out Hunger campaign, a partnership between the Pawtucket Red Sox, Cox Communications and the Citizens Bank Foundation, raised $75,000 for the Rhode Island Community Food Bank during this year’s baseball season.
This year, the Citizens Bank Foundation pledged to donate $75 to the food bank for each time a PawSox pitcher struck out an opposing player. The team’s pitchers ended the season with a total of 1,000 strikeouts.
Pawtucket Red Sox Vice President and General Manager Lou Schwechheimer said, “While we knew [our pitchers] would help us win ballgames, the fact that they also helped so many of our neighbors in need is even more special.”
Cox Communications helped to raise public awareness of the campaign and the issues of hunger in the community by providing public service announcements on its cable programming network and on the Pawtucket Red Sox Radio Network throughout the season.
The Rhode Island Community Food Bank serves more than 50,000 Rhode Islanders each month. •
