Mercury Print & Mail, with offices in Pawtucket and Attleboro, will quadruple its printing capabilities and will become one of the largest printing and mailing companies in the northeast, according to Peter Ottmar, chairman of Mercury.

“It was a nice opportunity to merge the two businesses,” he said. “We can be more competitive and offer more services.”

The acquisition was made official on Jan. 23, and employees from the two companies began work together the following Monday, Ottmar said. The printing division of Mercury will become New England Printing & Graphics, and New England’s current owner and CEO Peter Previdi will remain and serve as president of New England Printing & Graphics and vice president of Mercury.

Previdi purchased the company in 1975, which was originally founded in Woonsocket. New England Printing & Graphics – which has received a number of excellence awards from the Providence Graphic Arts Association and Printing Industries of America – moved to Lincoln after more than 100 years in that location.

“With the recent economic downturn, printing companies have faced many challenges,” Previdi said in a statement.

According to Mercury, the majority of New England’s 32 employees have been offered and accepted positions in the new merged company, which will be headquartered in a 100,000-square-foot facility in Pawtucket. Mercury had 85 employees before the acquisition, Ottmar said.

New England’s staff and operations will add a variety of services to Mercury’s printing and mailing, including additional printing services, data fulfillment, data card printing and bindery services. Mercury will absorb the company’s extensive customer list as well.

“They have a large customer base, and now we can provide more services,” Ottmar said. “We’ve got some great people from New England, we just got some new equipment and we used to have to outsource our bindery service – now we can do that in-house. It’s all about the people, and we’ve got better people now.”
