Free concert, lively conversation and dinner for Young Men of Newport County
(Middletown, RI) Child & Family’s Iron John Events will open its second year of unique programming for boys and young men with a special performance and discussion by world-renowned pianist John Davis. This is a free event for boys and young men ages 13-19 and will be held on Sunday, October 3rd, 5-7 pm, at Salve Regina University’s Ochre Court, 100 Ochre Point Avenue in Newport.

John Davis is a compelling pianist who studied at Brown University and then received his Masters degree from Julliard in NYC. Mr. Davis has spent much of his life immersed in African American music and literature. His latest Newport Classic CD is entitled Halley’s Comet: Around the Piano with Mark Twain and John Davis.
According to TIME OUT NEW YORK, “Pianist John Davis has made a mission of uncovering music by 19th-century black pianists, including slaves, whose work had a direct impact on the blues, jazz, rock, and R&B artists that came in their wake.”
“Iron John Events give boys and young men in our community a chance to explore career possibilities, problem-solve, to meet and talk with one another, and share a light dinner together, all for free!” stated Sharon Rust-Bottone, Event Coordinator for Child and Family. “ John will share his interests, passions and experiences as well as a private performance. It will be a once in a lifetime experience!”

Iron John Events are planned in partnership with the Newport Metropolitan Regional Career & Technical Center. These free sessions are offered to boys and young men between the ages of 13 and 19. Once a month Iron John Events are held, connecting teens with some of the most compelling, motivating and interesting men who share their talents, stories, and perspectives. The program is inspired by the 1990 book “Iron John” by Robert Bly, which contained lessons from the past and how they influence modern day male development.
