NEW YORK – A former Federal Communications Commission chairman with ties to Rhode Island-based private equity firm Providence Equity Partners has been named to AOL’s board of directors.
Michael K. Powell was one of nine members appointed to the AOL board as part of the company’s spin-off from Time Warner Inc.
Powell, the son of former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell and head of the FCC between 2001 and 2005, serves as a senior adviser to Providence Equity Partners.
Among the other new AOL board members is former Amazon.com chief information officer Richard Dalzell and technology investment banker William Hambrecht, founder and CEO of WR Hambrecht & Co.
AOL CEO Time Armstrong will serve as chairman of the board.
