Providence to kick off holidays with 5:30 tree-lighting

PROVIDENCE – Mayor David N. Cicilline and Channel 12 News anchor Karen Adams will be the masters of ceremonies this evening for the annual Holiday Tree Lighting ceremony on the steps of City Hall.

The event will begin at 5:30 p.m., with the lighting of the 30-foot balsam fir, donated by the Arnold family of Rehoboth, Mass., which was hoisted into position by a crane whose use was donated by the Hallamore Co.

The ceremony will include performances by The Voices of Sophia, a student group from the Sophia Academy; by Loriana De Crescenzo, of Opera Providence, singing a cappella; and by actors from the Trinity Repertory Company.

Afterward, the festivities will move across the street, to the Bank of America City Center, where a figure-skating demonstration will be followed by free public skating for the rest of the evening.

The celebration also will continue over on Westminster Street, tonight and the next two Friday nights, Dec. 15 and 22, as the annual Celebrate the Holidays Downtown spotlights Downcity shops, restaurants, artists and performers. From 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., free rides in horse-drawn carriages, sponsored by the Shoppes on Westminster, will depart from the corner of Westminster and Eddy.

Celebrate the Holidays also includes seasonal specials, special late hours at many shops and the Big Nazo puppet studio, and an arts and crafts show.

The “It’s Not So Big It’s Not So Pricey Holiday Art Show,” featuring small affordable works by local and national artists and artisans, will run through Saturday, Dec. 23, in a space at Westminster and Union streets.
