R.I. COVID-19 cases rise by 384, with 5 more deaths

PROVIDENCE – Cases of COVID-19 in Rhode Island increased by 384 on Tuesday, with five more deaths, the R.I. Department of Health said Wednesday.

Hospitalizations of COVID-19 patients totaled 130, a decline from 132 one day prior. Of those hospitalized, 17 were in an intensive care unit, a decline of one day to day, and 14 were on a ventilator, a decline of two from one day prior.

There have been 398,357 COVID-19 vaccines administered in the state to date, a rise of 12,093 day to day. Of all doses, 278,866 have been first doses, a rise of 4,078 day to day. The number of individuals that have been fully vaccinated in the state totaled 126,358, a rise of 8,337 from one day prior.

Cases in the state have totaled 132,184 to date, a rise of 434 day to day, accounting for both the day-to-day increase, as well as data revisions for previous days.

Deaths due to the virus in Rhode Island have totaled 2,588 to date.

There were 18,860 tests processed in the state on Tuesday, with an overall positive rate of 2%. When excluding both repeat positive and repeat negative test results, the positive rate was 21.4%. 

There have been 3.28 million tests administered in the state to date to 822,900 individuals.

The department also said that there have been 19 cases of the United Kingdom COVID-19 variant in the state to date. The state has yet to identify any cases of the South Africa or Brazil variants.

The department has also identified variants of interest, including 16 cases from a variant first identified in California and six cases of a variant first identified in New York.
