Report shows demand for temp workers in R.I.

Adecco, the largest staffing company in the world, announced Thursday in its monthly “Where the Jobs Are” report that the company is seeing increased demand for temporary workers in Rhode Island, especially in manufacturing and financial services. Rhode Island is one of many markets where Adecco is responding to increased need from employers for contingent workers, the company said. Some of the other markets are southern California, North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Baltimore and Washington, DC.

Darlene Lepore, Adecco area vice president, said in a release: “Job seekers and economy-watchers in general will be glad to hear that Rhode Island manufacturers, especially those that produce consumer goods and building products, continue to increase their demand for light industrial positions as well as supervisors and managers with experience in just-in-time manufacturing. They also seek machinists, welders, engineers, and customer service specialists. Manufacturers are filling administrative and other support positions, such as training, as well as full-time professional positions.”

Another growing industry is financial services, where call center managers are in demand.

Lepore notes: “Many of Adecco’s job orders are for temp-to-perm jobs. That shows that companies are more confident about the economy and are expanding their base of full-time employees. Bringing on contingent workers on a ‘try-before-you-buy’ basis is a no-risk way for companies to adequately evaluate a person’s job performance and for temporary employees to determine whether a position is one they will want for the long term.”

Adecco releases its monthly “Where the Jobs Are” report in advance of the U.S. unemployment report. The report is based on interviews with Adecco recruiters across the country. As Lepore says, “The volume of orders coming into Adecco’s Rhode Island offices is encouraging news for the state’s economy.”

With headquarters in Melville, N.Y., Adecco employs about 3,100 full-time employees and places more than 130,000 temporary associates each week.
