Bernard Golf splits with Mashantuckets
RICHMOND – Bernard Golf, a subsidiary of Bernard Investments Ltd. of Coventry, R.I., announced that it had sold its interest in Foxwoods Golf & Country Club at Boulder Hills in this town to Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, its former partner in the venture. Bernard received an undisclosed amount of cash from the Mashantuclet Pequots, plus full ownership of Lindhbrook Golf Club in Hopkinton, which had been part of the joint venture. As part of that venture Lindhbrook had been called Foxwoods Executive Golf Course. It will revert to its original name, Lindhbrook Golf Club, Bernard announced. The Mashantucket Pequots operate the Foxwoods Resort Casino in nearby Connecticut.

R.I. job growth reaches 6,600 in one year
PROVIDENCE – As Rhode Island’s unemployment rate continues to decline, the state Department of Labor and Training reported that jobs in the state grew by 6,600 between June 1999 and June 2000. Rhode Island’s unemployment rate remained below the national rate for the tenth straight month, the department reported. The state’s unemployment rate from May to June fell 0.1 percent from 4.0 percent in May to 3.9 percent in June, compared with the national rate of 4.0, a 0.1 percent drop from May to June. Labor and Training Director Lee H. Arnold noted that, “Rhode Island’s unemployment rate averaged 3.8 percent in the first half of 2000, its lowest first half level since 1989.” According to department statistics, jobs in Rhode Island increased in every category except manufacturing in the year from May 1999. Trade and services led the growth, with each adding 3,300 jobs over the one-year period. In manufacturing the decline in jobs continued with 1,600 fewer jobs reported in that category over the year.

Johnston gets $500,000 for Pocasset study
WASHINGTON, D.C. – A flood plain management study for the Pocasset River in Johnston got a $500,000 boost from the Natural Resources Conservation Service. That amount has been included in the Agriculture, Rural Development and Related Agencies Appropriations bill for fiscal 2001. An announcement of the award from the office of Sen. Jack Reed reported that “sedimentation, erosion and a lack of basic floodwater retardation infrastructure along the Pocasset River system have resulted in persistent flooding over the past 40 years. The purpose of the funds will be to develop a watershed plan.” Senator Reed added: “Chemical spills and sewage backup caused by flood waters rapidly entering businesses and residential basements could have serious environmental and health consequences. This situation must be corrected.”

Providence Energy, Southern merger advances
PROVIDENCE – The Federal Trade Commission has approved early termination of the waiting period for Southern Union Company’s proposed acquisition of the Providence Energy Corporation, the two companies announced simultaneously. Wiuth that hurdle removed, the companies are predicting that the acquisition will be completed by the end of this summer. The all cash acquisition was originally announced Nov. 15, 1999. The result is expected to bring Providence Energy shareholders $42.50 per share. Providence Energy is a distributor and marketer of natural gas, heating oil and petroleum products and a retail marketer of electricity and energy services.

$250,000 appropriated for museum exhibit
WASHINGTON, D.C. – A Senate appropriations bill will include $250,000 for the Heritage Harbor Museum in Providence to gather, organize and prepare oral and written histories of New England’s major Native American tribes. The bill has passed the full Appropriations Committee and was ready for action by the full Senate. The money for the Heritage Harbor was obtained through the cooperation of the Rhode Island Indian Council and Sen. K Reed.

KVH announces satellite system for Europe
MIDDLETOWN – KVH Industries, Inc. announced it has developed a satellite TV system, plus music and broadcast Internet date for recreational vehicles, coaches and buses traveling in Europe. Called TracVision L3, the is said to require no user input to access the various European TV satellite systems.

Textron wins bid in Turkey for helicopters
PROVIDENCE – Textron won the initial round of bidding and negotiations to supply 145 attack helicopters to Turkey, the company and the Turkish government announced jointly. If negotiations between Turkey and Textron’s Bell Helicopter Division are successful, the contract would be valued at $4 billion for the delivery of the military helicopters over a period of years. If negotiations are unsuccessful, Turkey would turn to a joint venture of the Kamov company in Russia and Israel Aircraft Company.

Web site offers hospital rating data
PROVIDENCE – Accreditation and evaluation information on Rhode Island hospitals is now available to the public through the Rhode Island Department of Health’s Web site. Working with the Joint Commission on Accreditation and Healthcare Organizations, the Department of Health has begun carrying information on the quality of health care available in Rhode Island hospitals on its Web site, HEALTH. The Web site carries current hospital accreditation status along with explanations of the process and Joint Commission reports. The Joint Commission began releasing reports to the public in 1994. Cathy Boni, RN MS, vice president of clinical affairs for the Hospital Association of RI, said about the release of the information, “Hospitals in Rhode Island are committed to quality care. This is just one of the many initiatives that we are working on with the Department of Health and Joint Commission to measure and report hospital care.”
