PROVIDENCE — Chosen from more than 60,000 organizations worldwide, Rhode Island’s
Emergency 911 GIS Development Program was recognized for its accomplishments in
geographic information system (GIS) technology. The Special Achievement in GIS
award was presented by ESRI, a provider of GIS Software at the Annual ESRI International
User Conference in San Diego, Calif. A geographic information system is a computer-based
tool for mapping and analyzing objects and events. Rhode Island’s GIS development
program enables the state’s Emergency 911 office to effectively respond to wireless
911 callers.
