WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Education has awarded Rhode Island’s
Department of Elementary and Secondary Education $810,536 for the state’s Public
Charter School Program. Three charter schools, Times 2 Academy, Textron/Chamber
Academy and Highlander Charter School, already exist. Thee more, the Paul Cuffee
Charter School, the International Charter School, and Kingston Hill Academy are
scheduled to open in September. Five more are under review. Charter schools are
public schools authorized to operate independently of state and local regulations
in order to produce innovations in educational methods.
