R.I. recognized for green construction

PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island is the first state to adopt the International Green Construction Code.
A Statehouse ceremony last month honored the state for enacting the Rhode Island Green Building Act, which was signed into law by Gov. Donald L. Carcieri in 2009. The act applies to any public project that is owned, leased or controlled by the state, including new construction projects larger than 5,000 square feet, or renovations involving more than 10,000 square feet of occupied or conditioned space. All such projects must meet the standards outlined by the International Green Construction Code.
Highlighting the new Center for Biotechnology and Life Sciences at the University of Rhode Island as a model for public construction, Carcieri said the recognition showed advancements in green building made under his administration. &#8226
