New England’s Best Workplaces for Commuters Coalition has issued its second annual list of best employers, and only three of the 113 are in Rhode Island, all nonprofits: Grow Smart Rhode Island, the Naval Undersea Warfare Center and the Rhode Island Housing and Mortgage Finance Corporation.
Spearheaded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the coalition comprises a range of New England transportation and environmental organizations. The list spotlights employers offering “superior” benefits to commuters such as public-transit passes, car pooling, telecommuting and incentives to live near work.

“Through transit subsidies, biking incentives and other offerings, these companies are spurring thousands of New England workers to leave their cars at home in favor of alternative commuting modes,” said Robert W. Varney, the EPA’s regional administrator. That, he added, leads to “twin benefits of improved air quality and reduced traffic congestion.” Varney added that employees with commuter benefits are eight times more likely to use transit than those without them.
