RIPTA to dedicate new maintenance and operations center

The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) will hold a ceremony to formally dedicate the new John H. Chafee Transportation Maintenance and Operations Center, honoring the late Sen. John H. Chafee, who worked on behalf of improved public transportation for the nation and for the State of Rhode Island.

The 104,000-square foot Chafee Center, located at 750 Elmwood Ave. in Providence, is the first new maintenance facility at RIPTA’s headquarters in a century. Built to service hundreds of vehicles, the facility is also the first in the state dedicated to maintaining clean fuel vehicles such as RIPTA’s trolley fleet.
