WASHINGTON, D.C. – The R.I. Public Transportation Authority has been awarded $5,197,500 through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Clean Fuels Grant Program to help the agency make its buses and vans run more efficiently and produce less pollution.
“This federal funding will help reduce pollution in our state while at the same time saving our taxpayers money,” said U.S. Sen. Jack Reed, who helped secure the funding. “Many Rhode Islanders depend on public transportation to get to work, run errands, or go to the doctor. It is essential that we take steps to reduce vehicle emissions and increase the fuel efficiency of our transit systems. This funding will cut down on pollution and help improve our air quality.”
Established in 1998, the Clean Fuels Grant Program is designed to help transit agencies purchase low-emission buses and related equipment. It also provides funds to build alternative fuel stations and modify garage facilities to accommodate the new vehicles.
