RISD construction projects awarded

Boston-based Shawmut Design and Construction, a national construction management firm with offices in Providence, was recently awarded two construction projects at the Rhode Island School of Design. Both projects are part of the series of renovations that will transform the Rhode Island Hospital Trust Building, at 15 Westminster St. and originally built in 1917, into a new living and learning center for RISD.

The Café Project, located on the first floor, involves the renovation of 6,200 square feet to create a cafeteria and dining area. Cambridge-based ADD Inc. is serving as architect for the project which will be turned over in August 2005.

The Fleet Library Project will begin in September and involve the 50,000 square foot renovation of the first two floors of the Rhode Island Hospital Trust Building. The Fleet Library will house the school’s library of design and art, including the school’s special collections, which require special temperature and humidity controls. The scope of work includes custom light fixtures, furnishings and textile designs created by RISD alumni as well as state-of-the-art architectural finishes and millwork.

Construction challenges for the project include working on a constricted urban site and within an occupied building that houses 500 dorm rooms on the nine floors above the library space. Boston-based Office dA Inc. is serving as architect for the project, which will be completed in May 2006.
