The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services has awarded $3 million to Roger Williams Medical Center for the study of stem cell biology, according to a press release from U.S. Sen. Lincoln Chafee’s office.
The grant will help fund separate studies evaluating the ability of bone marrow cells to transform into skeletal muscle cells and into skins cells to heal wounds. A third study will use a technology to evaluate the function of regulators of stem cells, according the release.
Roger Williams opened the Center for Stem Cell Biology in 2001, becoming Rhode Island’s first stem cell research center. It is headed by Dr. Peter J. Quesenberry, who is chairman of the hospital’s Department of Research.
