School complex dedicated to Pells

PROVIDENCE — The Springfield Street School complex has been dedicated to Senator
Claiborne and Mrs. Luana Pell. In dedicating the 32-acre complex in the Hartford
neighborhood to the Pells, Mayor Vincent A. Cianci Jr. hailed Senator Pell for
his 36 years of service in the Senate, especially in the field of education.
His Basic Education Opportunity Grants legislation, which he introduced in 1972
was renamed the Pell Grants in his honor in 1980. Cianci praised Mrs. Pell for
her various contributions to the community, including health care and the Pell
Center for International Relations at Salve Regina University. The Springfield
Street complex, which opened in the fall of 1999, includes an elementary school
and two middle schools. Enrollment in the three schools is expected to reach
1,065 next ear, according to the announcement from the mayor’s office.
