September home sales down from August

WALTHAM – Sales of single-family homes and condos in Massachusetts dropped in September, compared to sales from the previous month, but condo sales increased in a year-to-year comparison, according to the latest report from the Massachusetts Association of Realtors.



According to the association, 4,637 single-family homes were sold in September 2004, down 2.7 percent from the 4,765 that were sold in the same month last year, and 16.1 percent less than the 5,527 homes sold in August.



Sales of condominiums fared better but had a larger month-to-month sales decline. The report shows that 1,795 condos were sold in September 2004, up 16.6 percent from the 1,539 that were sold for the same month in 2003, but 24.8 percent less than the 2,387 that were sold in August 2004.

Median selling price for a single-family home increased 11.6 percent in a year-to-year comparison, from $310,000 in September 2003 to $346,000 this year, but in comparison to August’s median price of $358,000, September’s price dropped 3.4 percent, the report said.



The median selling price for a condo in Massachusetts rose 15.5 percent when compared to the same month last year, from $225,000 in September 2003 to $259,900 this year. There was a 5.1 percent decrease in median price on a month-to-month comparison, from August’s median selling price of $273,900.

 


Kopin reports third-quarter revenue up 31 percent



TAUNTON – Kopin Corp., whose technology is currently used in nearly one-third of the world’s cell phones and camcorders and is the microdisplay standard for the U.S. military, announced that revenue for the third quarter was up 31 percent from last year.



Revenue increased in the third quarter of 2004 to $22.9 million, compared with $17.5 million for the same quarter last year, but declined 3 percent from $23.6 million in the second quarter of 2004, the company said.



Net loss was $1.1 million, or 2 cents per share, compared with a net loss of $3 million, or 4 cents per share, for the third quarter of 2003. Net loss in the second quarter of 2004 was $2.3 million, or 3 cents per share, Kopin said.



CyberDisplay revenue increased 15 percent in a year-to-year comparison to $13.2 million and remained flat on a sequential basis, according to the company. III-V (another line of LEDs) revenue was up 62 percent in a year-to-year comparison and decreased 7 percent sequentially to $9.7 million.



For the year-to-date, total revenue increased to $68.8 million from $55.4 million from last year. Revenue from III-V products was $29.6 million for the first nine months of 2004, a 22 percent increase over last year’s $24.2 million. CyberDisplay revenues increased 25 percent to $39.2 million in the first nine months of 2004 from $31.3 million in the same period in 2003, Kopin said.
