NORTH KINGSTOWN – Workers are finishing the final touches on the new St. Bernard Roman Catholic Church in Wickford.
The 12,600-square-foot church nestled on 12 acres officially opened Aug. 12. But architectural firm Durkee, Brown, Viveiros & Werenfels Architects Inc. said last week it was still completing punch list items and workers had just recently tuned the sound system to perfection.
The $4.5 million church is sited at the corner of Ten Rod Road and Tower Hill Road, with its front doors facing away from Ten Rod Road. The exterior features stepped roof forms and board-and-batten siding to resemble old New England farming structures. Inside, architects kept the trusses exposed and created diffused natural light to produce a tranquil setting.
In 2001, the Davis family donated a parcel of land for the construction of the new church. A groundbreaking ceremony with Providence Bishop Thomas Tobin was held Aug. 5, 2007.
Durkee, Brown, Viveiros & Werenfels Architects Inc., founded in 1994, has roughly 30 employees. The Providence-based firm specializes in smart growth and sustainable design. For more information, visit www.DurkeeBrown.com.
