State gets $21M homeland security grant

The Department of Homeland Security awarded nearly $21.4 million to first-responder outfits in Rhode Island to be spent on training, equipment, exercise and planning purposes to prepare for a terrorist event or natural disaster. The funds are part of more than $8 billion distributed by the department from the State Homeland Security Grant Program since March 2003.

“Funding the capability of local first responders is central to our mission of increasing America’s preparedness,” said Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge in a release.

Since it was created, the homeland security department has awarded more than $41 million to state and local governments here to prevent and respond to potential acts of terrorism and natural disasters.
