State senator blasts utility’s rate-hike plans

Rhode Island state Senator John J. Tassoni Jr., a Smithfield Democrat, has expressed anger over potential plans of New England Gas Co. to seek an additional 5 percent hike in rates.

Gas company officials last week suggested to the state’s Public Utilities Commission that an 8.3 percent rate hike already under consideration might not be enough to cover rising natural gas prices, and that an additional 5 percent increase might be necessary.

“It is outrageous that if the gas company has its way, consumers will be faced with a rate hike of over 13 percent,” Tassoni said in a press release, calling the move “corporate greed.” The PUC this week is expected to vote on the 8.3 percent increase, which would take affect April 1 if approved. The additional 5 percent increase has not been formally filed with the state.
