State unemployment down

BOSTON — Even as the national economic slowdown drags on, Massachusetts’ unemployment
rate dropped from 3.6 percent o 3.4 percent in June from May. Growth in engineering,
health services and management jobs were cited as reasons for the reduced unemployment,
with jobs in the state up to 3.2 million, compared with 3.196 million in May.
As a result the number of jobless workers was reported to have been reduced by
5,700 to 113,400, according to reports from the state Department of Employment
and Training. Moreover, DE&T reported, 5,000 fewer people filed unemployment
claims that then 40,000 who filed in May.
