Steelwork up at URI Convocation Center

KINGSTON — The last beam of structural steel has been put in place at the URI
Convocation Center. With the last of the four main roof trusses placed, work has
begun on enclosing the north side of the building. That is supposed to be completed
in mid-August. The building is scheduled to open about a year from now. Masonry
work on the exterior walls of the new athletic offices in the center has been
completed. Iron workers have begun installing roof decking at the south end of
the building where the first trusses were installed. Closing in of the entire
building is the next objective, said Kathleen Mallon, URI’s director of strategic
planning and institutional research and chairwoman of the Convocation Center Building
Committee.
