PALO ALTO, CALIF. — StemCells Inc., the former Rhode Island-based CytoTherapeutics, said on Thursday it won two U.S. patents involving the harvest of neural stems cells and the identification of stem cells for the pancreas and liver in mice.
According to StemCells, one of the newly issued patents covers a new method to separate neural stem cells in order to grow them in culture. (Neural cells currently are being researched in the hopes of treating patients with neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s).

StemCells said it owns or has exclusive licenses to 25 issued U.S. patents in the neural stem cell field.
The second patent StemCells won covers a means of identifying stem cells for the pancreas and liver in mice. The company said the method could lead to ways of isolating human stem cells capable of regenerating the pancreas and liver organs in people.
Shares rose upon the news of the patent issues, closing at $5.41 on Thursday, after having closed at $3.28 on Wednesday.
