Study: Amica customers most satisfied

LINCOLN – For the 10th year in a row, Amica Mutual Insurance Co. has ranked highest in customer satisfaction among auto insurers in a national survey conducted by market research firm J.D. Power and Associates.

The 2009 National Auto Insurance Study released yesterday showed that consumers were significantly happier overall with auto insurance companies than they were a year earlier, a finding that J.D. Power attributed to relatively low premiums. The survey was conducted in March and April with 22,930 policyholders.

However, the research firm also warned that customer satisfaction is likely to dip later this year because rates are expected to rise.

Amica said it earned top scores in interaction, policy offerings, billing and payment, price and claims, scoring 851 out of 1,000 possible points in J.D. Power’s satisfaction index. The average score of other auto insurers was 801.

Rounding out the five highest-scoring companies were State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Co. of Bloomington, Ill.; Shelter Insurance Cos. of Columbia, Mo.; Auto-Owners Insurance Co. of Lansing, Mich.; Erie Insurance Group of Erie, Pa.; and Country Financial Group of Bloomington, Ill.

The recognition for Amica comes just weeks after the Lincoln-based company ranked first in a Consumer Reports survey of homeowners insurance customers.

In March, Amica also was named one of the top 25 companies in customer service by BusinessWeek magazine in its annual “Customer Service Champ” rankings.

“Each day, we’re busy handling details, requests and information and doing the things that fulfill our promises to policyholders,” Robert A. DiMuccio, Amica’s chairman, president and CEO, said in a statement. J.D. Power survey ranking “is important because it causes us to stop for a moment, take a breath and recognize that we do our jobs well,” he said.

Amica Mutual Insurance Co., founded in Providence in 1907, is the nation’s oldest mutual insurer of automobiles. It and its wholly-owned subsidiaries – Amica Property & Casualty Insurance Co., Amica General Agency Inc., and Amica General Insurance Agency of California Inc. – are members of the Lincoln-based Amica family of companies, along with Amica Life Insurance Co. and regional property insurer Amica Lloyd’s of Texas.
