Texas Instruments to let 2,000 workers go

DALLAS — Reacting to a fall in demand for its semiconductor products, chip maker Texas Instruments Inc. is set to lay off at least 2,000 employees, according to reports.

Details on which of the company’s facilities would be cutting jobs were not available. The company, which employs more than 42,000 workers worldwide, has a division in Attleboro. That division, TI Sensors & Controls, makes anti-lock brake sensors for automobiles and motor protectors for large appliances.

Nearly two months ago, Texas Instruments warned of a 20 percent drop in sales for the first quarter. The company began a voluntary retirement program, a hiring freeze, and cut down on capital spending. Last month, the company announced it would close a plant in Santa Cruz, Calif., eliminating 600 jobs.

Texas Instruments plans to discuss its first quarter earnings later today.
