The Board of Commissioners of the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corp., a quasi-public agency that operates the Central Landfill, voted Tuesday to give cities and towns a break by holding off on implementation of new standards for the percentage of waste municipalities must recycle and associated fees.
Members of the board said the change was meant to help towns, which were informed of a change in standards late in the fiscal year and would have had trouble planning for the measure. The standards will rise to increase the percentage of waste that is recycled in Rhode Island and charge towns more for not meeting those standards, but the change won’t take place until July 1. The change was supposed to take place retroactively on July 1, 2003.
