Two R.I. firms named to 2010 Red Herring list for tech firms’ innovations

PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island-based companies greenBytes Inc. and Monitise Americas have been named to the 2010 Red Herring 100 North America, a list that recognizes private technology-venture firms for their innovations.
GreenBytes is a Hopkinton-based provider of energy-efficient inline deduplicating data storage solutions. Founded in 2007, the company was also a winner in the Information Technology category of the 2009 Rhode Island Innovation Awards presented by Providence Business News in partnership with the R.I. Economic Development Corporation.
“We believe greenBytes embodies the vision, drive and innovation that define a successful entrepreneurial venture,” said Alex Vieux, publisher and CEO of San Mateo, Calif.-based Red Herring. “GreenBytes should be proud of its accomplishment, as the competition was very strong.”
The technology firm recently announced its entrance to the European market through Dutch distributor Consolidate IT and other European resellers.
Monitise Americas, also formed in 2007, is a joint venture of FIS and British firm Monitise plc. The mobile banking and payment company is headquartered in Providence.

Media company Red Herring selected winners based on criteria such as financial performance, investor record, technology innovation, market size, management, strategy and integration into their respective industries.
“This year was especially difficult,” said Vieux. “Despite the global economic situation, there were many great companies producing really innovative and amazing products that we had a difficult time narrowing the pool and selecting the finalists.”
The 200 finalists for the Red Herring 100 North America presented their strategies at the Red Herring North America Conference in San Diego. The winning companies were announced at the end of the conference on June 24.
“Red Herring has a proven track record of acknowledging those companies that are poised to disrupt an industry,” said greenBytes CEO Robert Petrocelli. Past winners of the Red Herring 100 North America include Google, Yahoo!, Facebook and Twitter.
