UNICOM, founded as a camera store in Providence more than 60 years ago, and now among Rhode Island’s most prominent technology companies, is moving from its current location on Elmwood Avenue in Providence to Woonsocket’s Highland Corporate Park, off Route 146. The company will build a 25,000 square foot office building, which it expects to occupy next fall, according to Marc Davis, the company’s president.
Davis said the company’s need for space was its primary reason for its decision to move. It now operates from a 9,000 square-foot building at 297 Elmwood Ave. The 6.7-arce site on which UNICOM will build gives the company the ability to expand by another 50 percent beyond the 25,000 square feet already planned, he said.

”We need more space,” Davis said during a news conference at Woonsocket Mayor Susan D. Menard’s office. The new headquarters will “expand our ability to serve our customers.”
UNICOM had been looking for space for more than a year, and had considered every piece of land and building within a 50-mile radius of Woonsocket, Davis said. He added that the city’s tax incentive package, which will freeze the company’s taxes at $24.10 per $1,000 valuation for 10 years. After that, the company will pay on its full valuation.
UNICOM has 225 employees. It is a high technology services company with five core businesses, including response services, project services and application development.
