US Airways drops plans for Hanscom

BEDFORD — USAirways announced that it was bowing to the fierce local opposition
to its plans to begin flying out of Hansom Field here and canceling its proposal.
The airline had announced that it would begin four daily flights to and from LaGuardia
Airport in New York City and three daily flights to its hub in Philadelphia. Only
Shuttle America which inaugurated commercial service to Trenton, N.J. two years
ago and announced plans to provide service to LaGuardia is providing regular inter-city
service from Hanscom at this time. But Shuttle America has filed for bankruptcy
protection and said it does not have enough equipment to offer regular service
to LaGuardia at this time. Two other airlines, Midway and Boston Maine Airways
have expressed interest in flying into and from Hanscom.
