BEDFORD — US Airways has informed the Massachusetts Port Authority that it would
like to establish daily service between Philadelphia and Hanscom Field. The Port
Authority owns and operates Hanscom Field and Logan International, where US Airways
already has a major presence. A Massport spokesman told the Boston Globe that
400 people from the towns surrounding Hanscom travel to Logan daily to board a
flight, illustrating the need for service out of Hanscom. Because of the essentially
residential and historical nature of the area, any proposal to increase commercial
service at Hanscom has produced major opposition from nearby residents. Shuttle
America, which filed for bankruptcy protection recently, still provides limited
service to LaGuardia Airport in New York as well as more frequent service to Trenton,
N.J Midway and Boston Maine airways have recently indicated they wanted to begin
flying out of Hanscom, Midway to Raleigh-Durham, N.C. and Boston Maine to the
Cape and the Islands.
