Verizon asks for PUC’s support in long-distance application

PROVIDENCE — Telecommunications giant Verizon is seeking the support of the Rhode Island Public Utilities Commission (PUC) in its quest to offer long-distance phone service in the state.

According to a statement issued by Verizon, the company notified the PUC on Wednesday that it expects to file a long-distance application with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) within 90 days. The PUC had asked Verizon that the company notify it within 90 days of Verizon’s intention to apply, Verizon said.

The FCC last week approved Verizon’s application to offer long-distance service in Connecticut. In April, the commission approved Verizon’s application to offer long-distance service in Massachusetts.

Once a review process is completed by the PUC, the FCC has 90 days to review Verizon’s application, the company said.
