The Verizon Corporation has received the Outstanding Philanthropic Corporation Award for 2000 in recognition of its commitment to improving quality of life in Rhode Island communities and for the universal spirit of giving and volunteerism demonstrated by Verizon employees, the company announced last week.
The annual award, sponsored by the National Society of Fund-Raising Executives, was presented this month in conjunction with this year’s National Philanthropy Day celebration in the state.

Donna Cupelo, president of Verizon-Rhode Island, called the prestigious award an affirmation of the company’s place in the community as a leading corporate citizen. “Verizon and its employees have a long tradition of giving in this state,” she said. “That commitment to service is a vital part of the Verizon Promise, and this recognition underscored Rhode Island’s positive view of our role in the state.”
“We’re part of every community, and we believe in being good neighbors,” Cupelo said.
Nominations came from the Providence Public Library, The Rhode Island Historical Society and Heritage Harbor Museum, groups that Verizon-Rhode Island has been actively involved with.
Awards were also presented to the philanthropic service group, Citizen and Youth in Philanthropy.
