Verizon Communications Inc., the
biggest U.S. local-telephone carrier, and unions representing
78,000 employees in northeastern U.S. states halted contract
negotiations until Sept. 2, federal mediator Peter Hurtgen said
in a statement.
Verizon and the unions, the Communications Workers of
America and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers,
have been seeking to avert a strike that could hamper service in
13 states from Virginia to Maine. The contracts expired Aug. 3.
