Stores Inc., the world’s largest retailer, said March sales at
stores open at least a year are rising at the low end of its
forecast because shoppers are spending more time watching
television coverage of the war in Iraq.
The discount retailer had forecast a sales increase in the
low single-digit percentage range from a year earlier. Spokesman
Tom Williams declined to be more specific about the forecast.

The number of shoppers visiting stores declined last week,
which compared with the week before Easter last year, Wal-Mart
said on a recorded message. The average size of purchases was
smaller as well.
