PROVIDENCE – Melissa Withers will leave her position as the executive director of the Business Innovation Factory to work for Providence Mayor-elect Angel Taveras as the director of communications.
“I’m really looking forward to the opportunity. I think it’s going to be a great adventure, I’m excited to reinvigorate and transform the communications platform for the City of Providence and to support the Taveras administration in their efforts moving forward,” Withers confirmed to Providence Business News on Tuesday.

Withers will be responsible for all communications, internal and external, for the Mayor’s office.
Before taking her position at the Business Innovation Factory, Withers served as director of communications and market development for the R.I. Economic Development Corporation, until December 2008, when she participated in the launch of the Rhode Island Science and Technology Advisory Council and RI-Nexus.
According to the biography on the BIF website, the Rhode Island native returned to the Ocean State in 2004; before that, she served as assistant director of communications and public affairs for the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Withers, a Providence resident, also serves as a board member of Young Voices, a youth-empowerment organization that aims to improve youth experience in areas such as education and recreation, the biography says.
