WLIA adopts privacy policy

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Board of Directors of the Wireless Location Industry Association (WLIA), which represents those companies focused on the new technology and services related to locating wireless devices, formally adopted the WLIA’s Privacy Policy on November 28.

“The general goal of the WLIA policy is to give subscribers of a location-based service the ability to choose whether or not to have geographically-tagged personal information collected,” said Tom Morner, WLIA’s vice president for standards and self-regulation. “The policy provides the assurance that the information will not be used for purposes beyond those intended and permitted. We want to ensure our customers know we will protect their privacy interests rigorously.”

The policy was finalized following individual company approvals and review by privacy advocates and federal agencies. Its fundamental structure derives from the Federal Trade Commission’s Fair Information Practices policy. The adopted WLIA Privacy Policy can be viewed online at the association’s Web site, http://www.wliaonline.org, and is available on request from Association headquarters.
