WEST GREENWICH and KINGSTON, R.I. — University of Rhode Island students will soon have the opportunity to learn about the biotech industry through an experiential learning program with Wyeth Pharmaceuticals.
URI and Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, a division of American Home Products Corporation, have agreed to collaborate on internship programs and on-site educational efforts at Wyeth’s West Greenwich facility, URI officials said.

According to URI, Wyeth plans to launch an internship program this summer that will include eight, year-round internships in biotechnology quality control, chemical engineering, training and development, and information technology. Students will work closely with mentors, receiving university credit and an hourly wage, the university said.
The university currently provides on-site educational skills training to Wyeth’s West Greenwich employees, and an on-site executive training program is in development, officials said. Also in development is a graduate biotechnology certificate program, to be taught at the West Greenwich facility.
