PROVIDENCE – The Canadian design and engineering firm Stantec has expanded its Rhode Island-based team and has named two transportation experts to its Providence staff, with an eye toward expanding its transportation-related contracts.
Walter Heller, a former district highway director for the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, will be a senior associate. In this role, he will manage design and construction programs for roads, bridges and transportation buildings throughout Rhode Island.

Derek Hug was named a senior transportation engineer. Hug has more than 20 years of experience in planning, traffic and transportation engineering. He was a former project manager at Fuss & O’Neill Inc.
Stantec moved into the Rhode Island market in 2016, after it acquired MWH Global, which had offices in Providence, according to a company spokeswoman. The company is the program and project manager on phase three of the combined sewer overflow control facilities program for the Narragansett Bay Commission.
The offices for the firm are located at 260 West Exchange St., Suite 1, in Providence.
