PROVIDENCE – CharterCARE Health of Rhode Island has named Dr. Ciaran J. McNamee as the hospital system’s new chief of thoracic surgery and thoracic diseases.
McNamee comes to CharterCARE Health with more than two decades of academic practice, surgery and research experience, having most recently led the thoracic program at Care New England Health System through its affiliation with Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

McNamee will oversee thoracic care at CharterCARE’s Roger Williams Medical Center in Providence and Our Lady of Fatima Hospital in North Providence, according to the system’s Aug. 4 announcement.
“Access to world-class cancer and surgical care is an important thread in Rhode Island’s quality of life. I’m proud that CharterCARE has attracted a national talent to take a leadership role in the development of our thoracic surgery program,” Jeffrey Liebman, CharterCARE CEO, said in the announcement.
In addition to his new role, McNamee serves as a staff member at Boston’s Massachusetts General Hospital and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and is an assistant professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School in Cambridge, Mass.
“His special interests in thoracic oncology and research background in lung cancer will advance patient care and treatment options and complement the work of the Roger Williams Cancer Center,” Liebman said.
McNamee graduated with his medical degree from McGill University and earned his master’s degree in experimental surgery from the University of Alberta, both in Canada.
