U.S. jobs picture mixed for September

Employers nationwide last month added only 51,000 employees, the fewest new hires in 11 months, according to a report yesterday by the U.S. Department of Labor.

But the report also revised figures for July and August, to indicate 62,000 more jobs had been created in those two months than previous estimates had indicated. And it said the U.S. unemployment rate edged down in September to 4.6 percent, from August’s 4.7 percent, matching June’s recent low.
