Conserving energy could save Prov. schools $11.3M

The city of Providence has awarded a contract to Energy Education Inc. to oversee the public schools’ utility consumption and develop programs to teach students and employees to use less energy, with projected savings of $11.3 million over 10 years.

More than 660 school districts, including at least a half-dozen in Rhode Island, have contracted with the Texas-based company, almost all seeing a substantial savings in energy costs, Councilman David Segal said in a news release. Segal has been urging the city to sign on with EEI for over two years.

EEI will be paid $100,000 to $200,000 in each of the program’s first five years, Segal said, but savings are guaranteed. If in any given year, the schools don’t save as much as the program costs to implement, EEI will reimburse them for the difference, Segal said.

“This contract is very exciting,” he said. “It will yield a real savings to our taxpayers, while teaching faculty and students how to be better environmental stewards. Efficiency is all the more important as energy costs continue to rise, and fossil fuels become more scarce.”
